Join two of the Rockies' most passionate and knowledgeable photographers, Kris Andres and Curtis Jones, for a multiday creative journey through Banff, Kootenay, and Yoho National Parks. This immersive workshop blends technical guidance with artistic exploration, helping you develop your personal vision while capturing powerful images in one of the world’s most breathtaking mountain landscapes.

April is a magical time in the Canadian Rockies—where winter’s final grip meets the first signs of spring. Snow still blankets the peaks, the rivers begin to thaw, and the light dances through shifting conditions, offering dramatic skies, foggy forests, and glacial blue lakes peeking through the ice. It’s a time of contrast, mood, and immense photographic potential.

Throughout the workshop, we’ll visit a mix of iconic locations and off-the-beaten-path gems, focusing on thoughtful compositions, storytelling, and elevating your artistic eye. Whether you’re refining your skills or discovering a new creative direction, you’ll leave with images—and memories—that will last a lifetime.

》YOUR OFFBEAT INSTRUCTORS

KRIS ANDRES // CO-LEADER
Based at the doorstep of the Canadian Rockies in Calgary, Alberta, Kristopher considers the mountains (along with everywhere he travels) to be his second home. Kris is always up for endless adventures with a smile—no matter how "atmospheric" the conditions are. He will be overly excited in almost everything he does in life, capturing each story with the click of a shutter, in any and all genres—from adventure to landscapes to portraiture to food and more! When he’s not out creating, Kris is a full-time yogi working to refine himself every day. [Bio Photo by Paul Zizka]

CURTIS JONES // CO-LEADER
Curtis is an adventure, landscape and portrait photographer from Newfoundland and Labrador who considers Nunavut his second home. Never tiring of seeing the sun rise from a new horizon or watching a contagious smile grow on the faces of friends and strangers alike as they step out of their comfort zone, Curtis seeks to tell stories with his photographs as he lives out his own. Throughout his career, he has had the pleasure of working with worldclass athletes, artists, and production teams while shooting in some of the globe’s most raw, wild, and challenging locations. Equal parts adventurer, artist and clown, he is never far from a camera, a tent or a good punchline.

Day 1 - Friday, April 17

We begin at 2:00 PM at the iconic Juniper Hotel with a warm welcome, introductions, and a creative kickoff in the classroom.

Expect a slideshow to spark inspiration, essential logistics, and a few short presentations to set the tone.

After a break for dinner and gear prep, we’ll head out for our first field session, location to be revealed, but it will be close to Banff and full of potential.

The adventure begins with golden light, new ideas, and fresh mountain air.

Day 2 - Saturday, April 18

We’ll rise early and hit the road for a full-day adventure along the legendary Icefields Parkway.

Prepare for an epic sunrise-to-sunset experience surrounded by towering peaks, glaciers, and alpine lakes. We'll chase light through jaw-dropping landscapes, stopping at carefully scouted locations for the best photographic opportunities.

While we’ll pause for a few meal breaks, we recommend packing extra snacks and water to stay fueled throughout this immersive day in the wild. It’s a day of non-stop creativity and mountain magic.

Day 3 - Sunday, April 19

We’ll wrap up our alpine adventure with one final sunrise shoot in the Banff area.

Expect quiet light, heartfelt moments, and a signature creative group portrait to mark the journey. After capturing those last frames, we’ll head back to the Juniper for a well-earned late breakfast, share highlights, and celebrate the memories made.

It’s a perfect closing chapter to a weekend of inspiration, connection, and mountain artistry.

WHAT OUR PARTICIPANTS HAVE TO SAY
ABOUT OFFBEAT

“Attending the Portraits in High Places workshop in Banff opened my eyes to a photographic world of limitless possibilities. The talks and the field demonstrations and the hands-on instruction were extremely informative and they have given me much to consider. I now have a much better idea of what I need to do to grow as a photographer. Attending this workshop turned into a key moment in my life and one that I will forever remember. The camaraderie, generosity of time and spirit that was shared among the leaders, photographers and models were very impressive and added to an extremely rewarding experience.”

— Michael R.

“I felt the level of collaboration and support among the participants in this one was exceptional and so was the size of the group. It is easier to hide in bigger groups when I feel insecure with my skills and talent. The content was timely, appropriate and exceedingly well organized. The facilitators’ presentation skills were exceptional. I came away with a little more confidence and a lot more knowledge. Thanks, Dave and Paul!!!”
